How to choose the best tent for your family
- Size – Most tent manufacturers call their tents “4-person” or “8-person” but don’t assume that you can comfortably fit that number of people in there! What that means, is that for a 4-person tent, you can fit 4 people, lying side by side in the tent. What it doesn’t mean is that you have enough space for 4 people to roll over or have any gear! Therefore we recommend going up by a size (or even two), so if there are 4 people in your family, we’d recommend you look for at least a 6-person or 8-person tent. A 10-person tent, while it seems huge would actually give you enough space to sit inside and play games too – something to consider if you are camping where it rains often or is a bit cold.
- Price – You can spend as little or as much as you want on a tent – it just depends on what you are after. We recommend spending as much as you can afford. A good quality tent can last for many years so you will get your money’s worth over time. More expensive tents often have better quality (or heavier) canvas, or extra features such as being easy to put up.
- Size and weight – Tents are usually made from either lightweight canvas with flexi-poles, or heavier canvas with sturdy poles. The lighter ones are more compact, taking up less space in the car, and can often be put up by just one person. The heavier ones are made with heavy duty canvas, which is great for keeping you a bit warmer, but will take up much more space in your car and be difficult for just one person to lift.
- Features – Tents come in all shapes and sizes. Things to consider include whether it has rooms, or is just one space, whether it has an annex to store dirty or wet gear, how many windows it has, and whether it has flexi-poles (lighter) or steel poles (heavier, but very sturdy). Think about whether you want to be able to stand up in your tent, and where you’d put each member of your family. Do you want it to be very dark inside the tent, or let in as much natural light as possible? Does the canvas need to be thicker to keep you warm, or lighter to keep you cool?

This carefully designed tent comes from world-renowned tent manufacturer Coleman, so already you know you’re getting something that has been tested, tested and tested some more. It’s a one room tent, measuring 16 x 7 feet inside, and can fit 3 queen-sized airbeds, plus, height-wise it is a generous 6’2” in the middle, allowing most adults to stand at full height.
A cool little feature it has is a hinged door, allowing you to easily get in and out of the tent without having to keep undoing and doing up a zip – perfect for the kids who can’t decide if they want to be inside or outside. There are also angled windows, which means you can keep water away from windows during rainy times, while still allowing ventilation into the tent. The door awning also gives you a bit more space to put your wet weather gear.
Another feature you don’t find in too many tents is that it has a built-in LED lighting system with three settings (high, low and nightlight). No more fumbling around in the dark for a flashlight!
Coleman claims this tent is a 15-minute set-up, and that could be true after a bit of practice, but we found it is not the fastest tent to set up (and you need to follow the instructions to make sure you add each pole in the correct order).6;

The floor has an anti-fungus coating to stop the mold and keep you nice and dry, and of all the tents we’ve reviewed, we believe this one holds up best in wet and windy weather.

We think you can fit a family of four, with gear in this tent quite comfortably. The biggest drawback however is the internal height at just 4’4” at the center, adults won’t be able to stand up inside (but the kids will!). The floor area is 12’5” x 8’5” and has a little spot at the front for your wet weather gear, or the dog. This is also an extremely light tent at only 11.7 pounds.

Not one but two wall dividers allow you to separate the tent into one, two or three areas creating bedrooms for privacy, or a sectioned off space to hide your gear from view, and with the door located in the center of the tent, you have the option to create two bedrooms, one at each end, and a living area in the middle.
